As a fruit tree physiologist, Kathy is responsible for research that benefits commercial peach production. The primary focus of her research is improvement of fruit quality through preharvest management that impacts shelf-life. But much of her effort is directed at the improvement of post harvest practices, prolonging fruit shelf life and increasing food safety. In addition, Kathy's lab supports collaborative projects focused on tree training systems, improving yield through increased fruit size and retention; plant protection through studies of Armillaria root rot, root knot nematode suppression and tree volatiles that attract lesser peach tree borer; and providing assistance to the rootstock and scion breeding programs of the USDA-ARS, via physiology based studies of some selections. Through her extension responsibilities, Kathy has developed the Stone Fruit web site that will serve the industry and support county agents who supply information to growers, and a new tree fruit master gardener slide set.
